Dropbox – Simple, Secure and Convenient

With the new LavaNet Cloud system, not only can you read, write and manage email, but you can also read write and mange documents, calendars and more.  If you are a DSL subscriber and have already taken advantage of our Free Domain Registration, you can have your domain set-up on Google Apps to gain even more control over your account services, user management, and collaboration tools.

In March, we wrote an article “Backing Up Your Files” where we covered several services available in the Cloud that are useful for backing up various kinds of file types.  We wanted to go into more detail about one particular service, Dropbox, because we’ve found it extremely useful around the office in Technical Support.

While Google Apps provides excellent collaborative tools for daily office suite usage, there are limitations to the volume of data that can be transfered between accounts over email and docs.  One quick and convenient workaround that we have found is to implement Dropbox as an Ad Hoc file sharing service.

This is useful for transfering bulky website files, database dumps, hefty media files (audio, photo, video, etc.).  We create a folder and set the sharing permissions to share it with an individual, using his or her email address.  Once the that specific folder is shared, we can then upload the requested file where the individual can retrieve it at their convenience. This operation works in reverse as well where the individual can upload a file for LavaNet to retrieve.

What makes Dropbox such a great service is that Dropbox will allow you upd to 2 GB of space with a free account.  All you need to do is register and install Dropbox to your computer.  It’s easy, secure and extremely convenient.  Be sure to give it a try.
